CMS Projects More Beneficiaries Being Served by ACOs in 2022

Over 11 million people with Medicare will be served by Shared Savings Program ACOs in 2022

February 1, 2022 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its annual summary of the Medicare Shared Savings Program. Also known as Medicare’s national ACO program, the data shows that Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are serving a growing patient population.

ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals, and health care providers that join together voluntarily with the shared goal of providing coordinated, high-quality care. These groups work to coordinate care to ensure that Medicare beneficiaries receive the right care at the right time. This also helps to reduce unnecessary and costly duplicate services and can prevent medical errors.

In the Medicare Shared Savings Program, when ACOs spend health care dollars more wisely while delivering high-quality care, they may be eligible to share in the savings.

Medicare Shared Savings Program Projections

According to the CMS report, it’s projected that over 11 million people with Medicare are being served by a Shared Savings Program ACOs in 2022.  This number is up from 10.7 million in 2021, and 3.2 million in 2012 and 2013 when the Shared Savings Program rolled out.

“Over the last decade, Medicare has promoted participation in value-based care to reward better care, smarter spending, and improved outcomes,” said Meena Seshamani, MD, Ph.D., CMS Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center for Medicare. “CMS’ commitment to value-based care has never been stronger. As we continue working toward our goal of increasing the number of people in a care relationship with accountability for quality and total cost of care, we celebrate this increase in ACO participation, and know we have more work to do.”

According to a white paper released by the CMS Innovation Center, the goal is to have all Medicare beneficiaries with Parts A and B cared for by an ACO by 2030.
