March 21, 2023 – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has taken a significant step in recognizing and advocating for LGBTQ-inclusive care in the healthcare industry. Recently, the organization acknowledged five healthcare sites that have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional care to the LGBTQ community.

The recognition comes in the form of an LGBTQ Safe Zone certification. LGBTQ Safe Zone certification occurs twice a year when the payer assigns them to healthcare sites.

To receive an LGBTQ Safe Zone certification, organizations must certify that providers have demonstrated care designed to meet the specific needs of LGBTQ patients. This can include staff training that caters to the care of LGBTQ patients, protection from discrimination based on gender identity or expression, gender neutral bathrooms, and inclusive forms and procedures, and a public commitment to connecting with and serving the LGBTQ community. In addition, sites must have a public commitment to connecting with and serving the LGBTQ community.

The five new healthcare sites recognized by BCBSRI that are part of Lifespan and its affiliate, Coastal Medical: include:

• Hasbro Children’s Hospital Adolescent Medical Clinic
• Hasbro Children’s Hospital Rehabilitation Services
• The Miriam Hospital Infectious Disease Department
• The Miriam Hospital’s Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinic
• Coastal Medical Consultants in Cardiology

These providers have demonstrated excellence in fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for LGBTQ patients, concentrating on promoting health equity and reducing disparities.

A key factor shared among these healthcare sites is their dedication to staff training in LGBTQ-inclusive care. By educating their employees on the distinct needs and challenges faced by the LGBTQ community, these providers ensure that their staff can deliver the highest quality care to all patients.
