Medicaid Challenges and Potential Reforms

January 29, 2021 – At the 2021 AcademyHealth National Health Policy Conference, a panel was led by Rebekah Gee, MD, MPH with a look at the challenges that Medicaid faces. It is the largest single-payer of health care in the nation, with 75 million Americans relying on Medicaid due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The panel agreed that there are a few changes that could improve the efficacy and efficiency of Medicaid. These changes include:
• Establish a program that has consistent minimum standards for the services and supports that those with Medicare are getting
• Ramp up investments in operational capabilities like contracts through federal government support
• Get social and medical dollars to work together in order to improve the health of low-income populations by focusing on food security and housing
